Mesothelioma falls under different types based on location and type of cells involved. Basically, there are four main types of mesothelioma and they include pleural, pericardial, peritoneal, and testicular. Pleural mesothelioma involves the linings that surround the heart and peritoneal affects the abdominal cavity lining. Pericardial is found in the sac that surrounds the heart while testicular mesothelioma affects the tissue lining covering the testes. Again, mesothelioma may be identified based on the cell types of the locations it affects. For example, there is epithelioid, sarcomatoid, as well as biphasic cells.1
The term mesothelioma is a blanket word that is used to generalize different kinds of cancer associated with asbestos exposure. Mesothelioma can develop in different parts of the body and different cells can describe what kind of mesothelioma you have along with the location it’s occurring.
During diagnosis, doctors will identify the cell type involved in your cancer using biopsy testing, and this identification helps in determining the type of mesothelioma you are suffering from and the kind of treatment that you need. The treatment a doctor recommends mainly depends on the location of the cancer, but other factors also come into play including cell type, overall health, age, and cancer stage. 1,2,3
Type of Mesothelioma By Tumors
Mesothelioma may be categorized based on the location and type of cell involved. It may also be categiorized based on the type of tumor. 1,2,3
A majority of mesotheliomas are malignant making the disease to be extremely deadly. The cancer has an extended latency period making it very difficult to diagnose. So many patients live with the cancer without showing symptoms, and by the time they are diagnosed with the cancer, it has evolved to an advanced stage for any treatment to work out well.
This again is a reason why malignant mesothelioma is considered very dangerous. That said, if a patient’s cancer is detected early in advance, there is still some hope. Having the right treatment helps patients to survive for years following the diagnosis.
This is very rare, only occurring in a few cases. One example of benign mesothelioma is the well-differentiated papillary mesothelioma (WDPM). This type of mesothelioma is easy to treat, it can be successfully treated.
